March 2003 - I had to restart my 100 gallon SPS system for a couple of reasons. One of which is that I had to move it due to remodeling in the house where the old rug it was on was being replaced with laminate flooring. Also coincindentally and unfortunately, I had returned from a vacation to find the tank dark and silent and to make a long story short I lost a lot of fish and choice SPS. Interestingly most of the frags made it. I've since added a other choice SPS and some fish. This past summer I had a sunroom built and had originally planned on placing the a 360 gallon system in there but decided against it due to the amount of room it would take. However I did move the 100 gallon SPS tank in there to tie me over until the 360 is finally set up. The tank receives a minimum of 4 hours of full direct sunlight in winter and more as the summer comes along. Interestingly it was much easier to keep the temperature down with the same chiller using direct sunlight versus using 2 400 watt halides. The temperature in the tank never reached over 81 degrees even in the hottest days of September whereas in the previous configuration using enclosed halides the temperature was nearly impossible to get below 81 degrees. This tells you the tremendous heat the damned halides put out. I concluded however after a few months that the SPS still required halide supplementation to accelerate growth and promote coloration. Four hours of direct intense sunlight certain is adequate to grow even the demanding SPS but not as I've seen with 400 watt Iwasaki halides. Maybe the longer photoperiods of summer will require much less supplementation but in winter definately so. One thing to note is that the coloration and irredescense of fishes truly come out when they are hit by sunlight.

March 2003 - Hopefully I can find some time soon to set this puppy up. (Pictured here is my son and my niece.) I've had it since October 2002 and haven't had the time to get it going. The tank is a custom Tenecor with dimensions of 8'L x 3'W x 2' high with 3" perimeter bracing and has a capacity of 360 gallons. It will be setup to a total height of only a little over 3 feet so as to add the top view as another viewpoint to see the corals and clams and will be completely open top meaning no canopy will be used. Viewing SPS and clams from the top reveals different and usually outstanding irridescent colorations. This tank will be a consolidation of my existing 100 gallon SPS, 180 FOWLR, 100 FOWLR, and 40 refugium/anemone tank. I will sell the 180 setup, use the 100 FOWLR as a sump and keep the 40 gallon refugium that will be placed above the tank. I'm contemplating using 2 1000 watt halides combined with Diamond Luminarc reflectors and will likely choose the Venture Sunmaster bulb over the other available 1000w bulbs. If not I'll use four of my existing 400 watt Iwasaki/MV PFO ballast combos which do give a crisp white rendition. Multiple eductors will also be my choice for water circulation. Choice of skimmers is still up in the air but it will definately be venturi rather than the other types which require high powered pressure pumps that are too expensive to run here in California. My choices are between Lifereef and Euroreef and possible an ASM Euroreef copy. Only issue with Euroreef is the large footprint required and the inability to set it up externally to the sump unless you are opting for the biggest of the Euroreef skimmers. The Lifereef offers extended contact time with its height and optional counter current capability. The ASM is a cheaper alternative and has a smaller footprint and can sit in the sump I plan on using. Having it in sump reduces plumbing requirements. However there is not much feedback out there on its quality and effectiveness. Stay tuned .... |

Welcome and thank you for visiting my Reef Flat. Here you will find galleries of high quality pics of my 100 gallon reef tank. Hope you enjoy them. The tank is focused on SPS corals but has a good balance of other corals as well. There are over 20 species/morphs of SPS (with numerous more colonies) most of which are of Acropora and Montipora species. A huge bright yellow Giant Carpet Anemone also calls this place home. The rest of the corals are balanced out by Tridacnid clams, LPS corals, soft corals and sea mats. Much of my thoughts on equipment and animals are shared here as well and hopefully can translate to useful information for some of you. I first started keeping Saltwater tanks in 1987 and experimented with reef tanks around this time with moderate success. I took a hiatus and only returned to the reef hobby late in 1999. The knowledge and techniques of today for keeping reef tanks and in particular the SPS corals has certainly made it possible to keep a slice of the tropical ocean with relative ease with success marked by thriving and growing corals and hobbyists commonly trading coral fragments. For those of you interested, the pictures here were taken with a stock Nikon Coolpix 950 - Great camera especially for those close-up macro shots. So surge on in and enjoy the pics.
